What’s your experience?

I have been doing hair since I was 3 years old, and at 19 I went to school to do it professionally. It’s almost an inherited passion. I’m a third-generation stylist with my grandmother, aunt, and uncle all having mastered their craft long before me. Over the years, I’ve continued to build on the innumerable trainings I’ve attended and have used this knowledge to create a space that is both timeless and relevant in today’s industry.

What’s your specialty?

I love cutting short hair and working with a razor whenever I can. I also really love color and working with my clients to achieve something that feels true to them.

Why do you love what you do?

The unique energy and conversations I experience with clients everyday is something I treasure. It becomes collaborative, and that is magical. I love the process of discovery and using my expertise to offer options one would not normally consider.

How do you express yourself?

I grew up as a dancer, so I feel my most expressive when moving my body. Right now, that is yoga. I also love a late-night concert and/or dance party. It’s usually followed by my favorite pizza. Soul food is such a thing, and it comes in many different forms.

How do you get out of a creative rut?

Travel, reading, music, art, education. And most importantly - never underestimate the power of a good wine shared with friends.

Where do you go in the Twin Cities to be inspired?

I love walking around lakes or by the river. There’s something to being surrounded by water, it renews me. Of course, there are museums and some fabulous restaurants and thrift shops too.

Most noteworthy era?

Gotta say the 90s. And I was even there living it the first time around.

What do you do for self-care?

So. Many. Things. Self-care is important. Cooking and eating well, especially when I can share it. Yoga. My conversations with clients from behind-the-chair are also mutually therapeutic and a total highlight of my day.

Piece of advice for those struggling with self-confidence?

I struggle sometimes, too. I think knowing it’s a natural part of the human condition is helpful. This is your one life, so don’t be afraid to push back on the limits and live in a way that’s true to you. Find a friend that reminds you of how amazing you are. If you don’t have one of those, hairstylists are really good at that.

  • "Every time Molly does my hair it’s an experience in artistry. I’ve worn an inverted bob for years. Molly’s cut on this classic style is unbelievable. And let’s not forget color. When Molly says she is going to paint my hair and she puts her artist eye on it I know I will love it. And the rest of the team at Gem creates beautiful hair."
